Alvan Ikoku Workers Protest, Seek Provost’s Resignation

Workers of Alvan Ikokwu College of Education, Owerri , Imo State, acting under the aegis of Joint Action Congress, have grounded the institution in protest , demanding that the acting Provost of the College, Dr. Dan Anyanwu , should step aside .

The enraged workers said that it was illegal for the acting Provost to contest to be the substantive provost without stepping down from the post first .

They said Anyanwu would unduly manipulate the process if he was allowed to continue to be the acting provost while aspiring to become the substantive provost of the institution .

The protesting workers , who also marched to the Provost ’ s office , were not allowed to meet with the acting Provost , Dr. Dan Anyanwu.

Some employees of the institution had engaged one another in a free -for-all when JAC , Alvan Ikokwi College of Education chapter Chairman, Dr. Benjamin Nwokedi , announced that the unions would embark on an immediate indefinite strike .

It took the efforts of policemen, who were on the ground for normalcy to return.

An Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations led the team of policemen who were present during the protest .

Addressing journalists , Nwokedi said that the six months acting tenure of Anyanwu expired on March 16 , 2018 .

The JAC chairman argued that it was unconstitutional for the acting Provost to continue to hold sway while his tenure had elapsed.

He said , “ We have therefore embarked on an immediate indefinite strike action . This is because the six months acting tenure of the acting Provost , Dr. Dan Anyanwu , elapsed on March 16 .

“Members believe that as the acting provost who is vying to become the substantive provost , he will unduly manipulate the process in his favour . We stand on the Abuja accord, which mandated him to step aside if he is vying for the substantive position.
