Open defecation refers to the practice whereby people go out in fields, bushes, forests, open bodies of water, or other open spaces rather than using the toilet to defecate.
It poses a serious threat to the health of children and exposes women to the danger of physical attacks and encounters such as snake bites, rape etc
During our visit to Sango Ojurin Market in Ibadan North LG, a self acclaimed Open Defecation Free #ODF Market, Iyaloja Momotu Raifu the market women leader intimated the media practitioners on how sensitization of Traders have played a great role in reducing Open Defecation in the market.
“We have meetings every week and during each meeting, we make out time to educate ourselves about the negative impacts of Open Defecation on our health”.
She further stated that they have monitoring strategies and defaulters pay fines.
“We monitor everyone closely to ensure they are not defecating outside. The defaulters are also asked to pay N2000 fine. The Traders are cooperating well with us”.
There were frequent cases of disease outbreak like cholera, diarrhoea and others before the intervention of UNICEF.
Nigeria is currently leading the “Clean Nigeria : Use the Toilet” campaign to end open defecation by 2025 and achieve universal access to safely managed sanitation.
