Director of Finance Commits Suicide in Ekiti Local Government

There was tragedy in Ekiti state on Monday as news filtered out that a senior local government official, Michael Kayode Bamisaye was found dead having committed suicide at his residence in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

Mr. Bamisaye was the Director of Finance for Ise/Orun Local Government Council, in Ise-Ekiti. He was reported to have jumped into a well in his compound behind Tinuola Maximum School, off Afao Road, Ado-Ekiti.

Eyewitnesses reported that Mr. Bamisaye had tried to commit suicide earlier by drinking water mixed with cement; when that apparently failed to work, he jumped into the well.

Sympathizers including top management staff of local governments in Ekiti State have been trooping to the house of the deceased to pay condolences to the family including the wife who is now a widow.

News of Mr. Bamisaye’s suicide ground activities at Ise/Orun local government secretariat where Bamisaye worked as Director of Finance; the reason for his suicide is still unknown.

Local government staff reported that Mr. Bamisaye was the third senior management staff of Ise Orun local government council to die in a mysterious manner stating that two other directors before Bamisaye had also died in mysterious circumstances.

According to a local government source, who wished to remain anonymous:

The deceased woke up at about 4.00 am to assist his wife to do some house chores and even called some council workers he used to convey to Ise every day to be ready to join him to their station. All of a sudden, he disappeared and went outside with the wife looking for him. Later she discovered that the well was opened and they saw the body floating.”

The source said further that the cement mixed with water which was initially drunk by the deceased was discovered near the well by the wife of the deceased and others who had joined in the search. It was therefore speculated that the late Director had drank the mixture before jumping to his death.

The corpse of the deceased has been moved to the mortuary by men of the State Fire Service.
