Black Panther actress, Danai Gurira gave a powerful acceptance speech at Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards last week and it brought almost every woman in the room to tears, and it most likely will do same to you too.
The actress, who starred as Okoye the General leading the entire Dora Milaje army in the epic Black Panther movie, spoke about growing up in Zimbabwe, having to dress up at age 9 to dance for the Americans who came to visit and having the most validating moment when Essence Magazine’s for Editor-in-Chief, Susan L Taylor, also a Black woman, walked up to her after that dance, looked her in the eyes and told her she was very beautiful.
She went on to thank all the Black women without whom she wouldn’t be where she is today. Lupita Nyong’o was one of the women mentioned and at this point in her speech, almost every woman in the room, including Lupita was wiping away tears from their cheeks.
